Author: Paul Granberg, Issue: June 2004, Topic: Household

Now is the perfect time to make sure that your house is free of pests (such as dani (tatami-bugs), roaches and fleas), over the summer since they are just waking up from their winter slumber. I can't think of a better way of greeting them than by breaking their breeding cycle.

The procedure for bombing your house is quite straight forward.

Just purchase a bomb/fogger from you local supermarket or home centre that is appropriate for the size of your apartment/range of pests that you are targeting.

There are two types of bombs, smokey (small chemical reaction in the supplied cup), and smokeless (small button shaped aerosol), but they both do the same job.

Cover all your food preparation surfaces, put your clothes away, make sure that your bathroom is closed off. Close all your windows and open the internal doors to allow the fog/smoke to drift through. Make sure that if you use a gas water heater, that is turned off.

Set up the bomb(s)/foggers(s) on a sheet of newspaper in the rooms that you are treating and set them off.

Leave your apartment and DON'T come back for at least 2 hours. When you do, open all the window and thoroughly air out your home. It would also be a good idea to wipe down food preparation surfaces as well.

TAAAAA DAAAAA! You should now be pest free for summer.

Have a read through this guide for further tips on preparing for summer and getting over winter.
