Alchemists tried in vain to turn iron into gold. Bessemer succeeded in quickly converting molten iron into modern steel about 150 years ago in England. That was the very start of the "Iron Age" or industrialization. Seventy million tons of steel were made every year in 80s. Now BRICs (highly emergent nations like Brazil, Russia, India, and China) are growing rapidly. Annual production reached over 100 million tons last year. Still we need more steel for our societies. Accordingly, we are facing serious resource and energy problems every year. No other material can replace steel's position in our society. We must consider the recycled use of obsolete materials and steel. If the performance of these materials can be improved to some extent, the benefits become remarkable. "Double strength and double life" was the slogan of the ultra-steel project at NIMS. Nanotechnology was utilized in a sophisticated way to increase beneficial properties and minimize the use of alloying.
