The Kyoto City Info office has moved as of the first of this month and there are no signs telling you this and all the guide books are out of date. To get there, you have to go to the JR Isetan Department Store in the JR Kyoto Station and take the South (Minami) Elevator to the 9th floor. Step out of the lift and it's right in front of you. The info place has a full library of foreign language books and videos you can access for free and cheap internet access (15mins for 100yen). Staff speak English.
Also if you need a place to stay try JHoppers Guest House.
This place is brand new, shiny, clean and all staff speak great English. Owner Iida Akihito has travelled extensively. Massive kitchen, coin laundry on premises, ridiculously cheap internet, sheets like something out of an ad for laundry liquid they were so clean and white and best bit: price is only 2500 for dorm or 3500 for single. V safe, no curfew, you get a key to the front door that's locked at midnight. bike hire: 500 per day or 1000 for mountain bike and v. close to JR Eki. Won't get a better deal in Kyoto.
