Trumpet And Organ Concert

Author: Author unknown, Issue: October 1997, Topic: Events

A free concert featuring trumpeter Yutaka Tobe and organist Mamiko Iwasaki will be held at Tsukuba Gakuen Church near Daiei. The concert begins at 4 pm and will include works by Handel and Praetorius among others.

One unique feature of this concert is that the organ is still in the process of being built. For the last few years, Toshiyuki Mitsuhashi, a high energy physicist by trade, has been spending most of his non-working, waking hours building a full-scale organ from scratch. He is using designs from 17th Century Europe, with the only item not of the designs of that era being an electrically operated fan (no one is in the back pumping feverishly on bellows to supply the air). While many pipes (all made by hand) are yet to be crafted, the hundreds already in place have a truly beautiful sound. Much of the decorative wood working likewise remains to be finished, but already, the beauty of the instrument is quite evident.
